How can I recover files from a broken external hard drive?

recover files
Mike asked:

Recently my 500gb external hard drive fell onto the floor and now it is not working. Windows cannot detect it at all and it is making a loud clicking noise (I’m assuming that when it fell the head broke).

Is there any way at all to recover the files on it? Could I buy an identical hard drive and swap the disks around? There aren’t any places that fix hard drives in my area so I need to know how to recover the data myself. Thank you.

Harddrive crashed how much will it cost to replace it?

crashed harddrive
Random Questions Inc. asked:

I know it’s expensive, that’s not my question, my question is how expensive? Can you give me the name of a company that can recover the data. The physical drive crashed, so I believe that the drive will have to be taken apart and re-constructed; however I don’t know of any companies that do that. How much would it cost, and where? Thanks
