Can I get data off my computer with a crashed hard drive with an external hard drive?
blondie asked:
The hard drive crashed. I want to get the data off the computer. I understand that I can add a new drive and put the crashed drive into the slave position and extract the data. My question is do I have to get a hard drive that will fit in the master slot or can I use an external hard drive for getting the files off?

In order to start the computer you need a healthy drive with an operating system on it.Then you can retrieve data from the crashed drive. If your CMOS support boot from removable device and your external hard drive has operating system installed on it then you can use it.

You’re not getting that data off your “crashed” hard drive if it actually did crash. If the motor just went bad, the you might be able to take it somewhere and get the data saved, but if it’s a true “head crash” then usually nothing is going to save that data as the internal parts of the drive are destroyed.

You can do this by double formatting your drive. To recover your file just install os and choose options to leave existing configuration on your computer. then follow instructions until it ask you to reboot computer.
By doing this you can now go to your profile and save your data to your partitions. You had actually formatted the drive back to its OS but it will ask you on which system to choose.
That is why you had to format this again by a fresh copy on your computer to eliminate the prompt option on which OS system. At least you had now access your old files and had save it.
I hope this helps email me if this does not work for more details.
